The Italian pharmaceutical company that made the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra has confirmed a long-running patent dispute with the European drugmaker that expires on April 30.
The generic manufacturer has won the dispute, which will be the first of its kind in the country, but will run the risk of facing the company’s ire. The European company has been working on a drug that is still under patent in other countries, including Italy and Spain.
A German judge in the Italian case in 2010 ruled in the European court that the Italian company had “negligence” with the Italian company, in which case the company will pay a small royalty on the patent.
However, the Italian court ruled that Viagra’s patent had expired in Europe, and that the court had not granted the patent holder a license.
Viagra has been one of the most popular erectile dysfunction drugs of all time, with more than 4 million prescriptions written in Europe since it was introduced in 1998. Pfizer was the first company to market the drug in the European Union, with the patent still in place.
In 2010, Viagra’s patent expired in the European market, but it took the generic manufacturer until 2014 to launch a generic version of the drug, which is already licensed in all other markets.
This decision will likely depend on how the German court considers the case, and whether it is a case for a new company or for the generic manufacturer.
The European judge said that the patent “is a significant barrier for patients who are seeking to access their medicines”, and the court had not yet found a case for the generic company to appeal. The court’s ruling will prevent the generic manufacturer from launching generic versions of the drug.
However, Viagra’s patent on the drug has already expired in most countries, and the court will not grant a license to the generic manufacturer. The company is working on a generic version of its popular erectile dysfunction drug.

To investigate the association between the use of sildenafil (Viagra) and men with erectile dysfunction (ED) in a population with a low sex drive. We conducted a prospective cohort study in five areas in the city of Ho Chi Minh City (HMC) in Vietnam. We investigated the prevalence of ED and the prevalence of sexual and psychological problems in the respondents. The prevalence of ED was estimated using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire and the International Index of Sexual Function-Sexual Health Questionnaire (IIEF-7). A total of 13,366 participants were identified with erectile dysfunction in the respective areas of HMC between 2000 and 2010. The prevalence of ED was reported as the prevalence of men with erectile dysfunction, with a mean age of 50.8 years (SD 12.1) and a mean duration of ED in the five areas, respectively. Men with ED had a prevalence of 50.0% (95% confidence interval [CI] 50.0 to 50.0) with a median age of 34.8 years (range 18.1 to 46.9). The prevalence of ED in the five areas was also compared with that in the other three regions, as well as with that of the general population. The prevalence of ED and the prevalence of sexual problems are increased in men with ED. The prevalence of ED in the five areas was similar to that in the general population. A causal association between the use of sildenafil and erectile dysfunction was observed, with men with ED having a prevalence of approximately 18.2% and the prevalence of ED being approximately 2.0% (95% CI 1.1% to 2.8%). However, the prevalence of sexual problems was not observed in the general population. The prevalence of ED in the five areas was higher than that in the general population.
Based on the results of this study, it is recommended to increase the dosage of sildenafil (Viagra) and improve the frequency of sexual problems associated with ED. However, the use of sildenafil in the general population is not recommended.
The use of Viagra in Vietnam was not associated with any of the sexual problems, regardless of the severity of ED.
A total of 13,366 participants were identified with erectile dysfunction in the respective areas between 2000 and 2010. The study population was recruited in five areas in the HMC. The five areas in the HMC were: Ho Chi Minh City, Tainan, Tainan City, Tainan City, and Vientiane. The study population were recruited from four urban and two rural areas. The five areas in the HMC were: Vientiane, Tainan City, Tainan City, Tainan City and Ho Chi Minh City. All the participants were diagnosed by a doctor in the respective areas.
The participants were selected based on their age, sex, and the age range of the participants.
The prevalence of ED and the prevalence of sexual and psychological problems in the participants were estimated using the IIEF-7 questionnaire. The prevalence of ED was reported as the prevalence of men with erectile dysfunction, with a median age of 46.4 years (range 19.5 to 73.9) and a mean duration of ED of 18.4 years (range 13.5 to 26.9). The prevalence of ED was also reported as the prevalence of men with sexual problems, with a median age of 30.4 years (range 18.2 to 43.1).
Data were collected through an anonymous questionnaire.
