WASHINGTON — The Department of Justice has launched a probe into the price of a popular drug Viagra and the price of its generic version, saying it’s being manipulated to make it more expensive.
Viagra is the drug of choice for patients with erectile dysfunction but is also a mainstay for those facing the financial challenges of life-threatening illnesses such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Many have used the drug for years, but the Food and Drug Administration has made the drug less expensive.
Viagra has become a go-to treatment for some men who have erectile dysfunction, and it’s not the only option. The drug also helps reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes in patients with heart disease.
“When the FDA’s investigation has focused on the cost of Viagra, the agency has been able to determine that Viagra is an effective medication,” said Acting Assistant Attorney in Charge David A. Bresch, special to the Justice Department’s Civil Division. “The fact that the FDA is pursuing a drug that’s been prescribed in an FDA-approved form does not mean that the FDA will try to find a way to fix the price of this drug.”
Viagra, approved in 1998, is a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor, which means it helps treat erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the penis.
It has been studied by multiple organizations, including the Drug Safety Monitoring Center, the International Society of Sexual Medicine, and the American Urological Association.
The Food and Drug Administration has not been involved in the investigation, but Bresch said that the agency is pursuing a drug that is currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration for a class of medications called phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors.
“We are looking at the drug to see whether Viagra will work better for patients with erectile dysfunction,” Bresch said.
While the FDA is seeking the lowest price of a drug in the world, Bresch said that it’s difficult to predict how much Viagra will cost. “The FDA has made several decisions about the drug, but there is no guarantee that the price will be lower,” he said.
Viagra has been on the market for about 20 years, and it’s still available at a fraction of the cost of its brand-name counterpart. The FDA has not yet approved Viagra for this class of diseases, so it’s likely that it will have to take a new drug.
Bresch said that the agency has made some progress in the past few years on the drug’s safety and effectiveness, but he said he doubts that the FDA will begin to investigate this latest development.
“We’re still waiting on a new drug that is to be approved by the FDA, and we’re hoping that something can be done to prevent a drug from being pulled off the market,” he said.
As of late, the FDA is seeking approval for another class of drugs, including sildenafil (Viagra). Viagra will likely be a cheaper alternative to other erectile dysfunction drugs, including Cialis.
Viagra is a medication that helps men get and keep an erection, and its popularity has been growing. In recent years, Viagra has also been used to treat low blood pressure and high blood pressure.
“When we looked at the pricing of Viagra and its competitors, we found that those drugs were much more expensive than the generic version,” Bresch said.
As for the price of the generic version of Viagra, Bresch said that there will likely be price increases for the company to try to find a cheaper alternative.
“If it’s ever going to be approved by the FDA, it’s going to be in the hands of the FDA and not in the hands of the drug makers,” Bresch said.
In addition, Bresch said that Viagra isn’t available to be sold without prescription, and it won’t be approved for long.
Bresch said that the drug has a long history of being used as a treatment for a number of health problems, and there are no known drug-makers that have taken advantage of the Viagra market.
“There are some other drugs that have been used for years to treat erectile dysfunction, and they have not been approved for that purpose,” he said.
